Quick answer

Mortal Shell II has eight primary melee weapons in the launch build: Iconoclast, Axe & Dagger, Veteran’s Battle Axe, Great Martyr’s Blade, Obsidian Hammer, Axatana, Clockwork Scythe and Black Needle. The starting Iconoclast is automatic; the other seven come from dungeons, bosses or specific exploration routes.

All eight primary weapons

Weapon Where it comes from Main gate
Iconoclast Prologue Automatic with the opening Shell sequence
Axe & Dagger Shrine of Trials Chapel Key
Veteran’s Battle Axe King’s Crypt Finish the dungeon
Great Martyr’s Blade Martyr’s Prison Finish the dungeon
Obsidian Hammer Obsidianite Mines Defeat the miniboss at the end
Axatana Forgotten Tower Traversal route + guarded chamber
Clockwork Scythe Chamber of Becoming Permanently defeat Sariel
Black Needle Sester’s Gate / Stray Sesters route Complete the gate/encounter

Iconoclast

You receive the Iconoclast during the prologue. That makes it the baseline weapon for learning timing, Resolve generation and how much commitment a melee string costs in positioning rather than stamina.

Do not assume a later weapon is automatically a strict upgrade. Mortal Shell II’s build system makes reach, speed, compatible Tarstones and Shell synergy matter as much as raw damage.

Axe & Dagger

The Shrine of Trials route needs the Chapel Key near Mushroom Village. This is a good early detour if you want a faster paired-weapon feel and do not want to wait for Mammon.

Veteran’s Battle Axe

The Battle Axe is at the end of The King’s Crypt in Fainweald. Launch build testing frequently recommends it for Eredrim because the charged attack is useful without requiring a late-game weapon route.

Great Martyr’s Blade

This heavy blade sits at the end of Martyr’s Prison outside the Citadel route. Balance Patch 1 increased its attack damage, which is exactly why “best weapon” lists written before the patch should not be treated as permanent.

Obsidian Hammer

The Hammer is tied to Obsidianite Mines in Mammon and the miniboss at the end of the dungeon. It is a natural fit for players who want heavy commitment and Break pressure rather than speed.

Axatana

The Forgotten Tower houses the Axatana. Its transforming light/heavy identity makes it one of the most flexible launch weapons and one of the most searched early-rush targets.

See Axatana Location for the route without turning this overview into a giant walkthrough.

Clockwork Scythe

The Scythe is tied directly to Sariel in the Chamber of Becoming. If Sariel keeps reviving, destroy all four revival tablets before the final kill.

Black Needle

The Black Needle is earned through the Sester’s Gate / Stray Sesters route. It is especially notable for Genessa because full-release build testing pairs it with Phantom stacking and Faithful Doubles.

See Black Needle Location and Genessa Build.

What to upgrade first

For a first run, the safest upgrade rule is boring but effective: one melee weapon you actually use, not three weapons you might use later.

Balance Patch 1 reduced smelting costs, making experimentation less punishing, but spreading materials across every pickup can still leave all of them underpowered when Mammon starts hitting harder.
